During the latter's reign, Andrewes served successively as Bishop of Chichester, of Ely, and of Winchester and oversaw the translation of the King James Version of the Bible. In the Church of England he is commemorated on 25 September with a Lesser Church: Church of England.

Inwhile Andrewes was working as one of the team of scholars producing the Authorised Version of the Bible, he was consecrated bishop, and served for more than 20 years at Chichester, Ely, and finally Winchester.

After his death insome 96 sermons were printed by royal command, edited by two leading bishops. Preached at the funeral of the Right Reverend Father in God, Lancelot, late Lord Bishop of Winchester.
